a5c7b9f00b 1991: the Cold War is ending. Just days before the US President is to visit China for trade talks, a CIA operative named Bishop is captured in a rogue operation at a Chinese prison. He'll be shot in 24 hours unless the President steps in. CIA honchos hunker down at Langley, controlling the damage to the diplomatic mission by hanging Bishop out to dry. Enter Nathan Muir, one day before retirement from the Agency, the man who recruited and trained Bishop. Can he find a way to get the President to free Bishop; if that fails, can he engineer a rescue? He hangs around Langley, telling stories about Bishop,he gathers intelligence, looks for opportunities, and runs his own spy game.

Utterly nothing new or surprising here. Redford & Pitt and director Tony Scott sleepwalk their way through a completely standard action flick that includes standard cutesy dialogue between the two leads, routine explosions, the star outwitting everyone, and a one in a million shot ending. Redford has a few good linesthe lead, but it just annoys me when these government agency-based movies portray EVERYONE in said agencycold, heartless idiots and the starthe one character with the heart of gold, and is constantly able to outwit AND (this is most important) get the last and most clever one-liner in. The romance Pitt is in is throughly unconvincingwell. There is nothing horribly offensive here, but you've seen it too many times already.
"Spy Game" is an entertaining movie , one of the movies which engages your mind through the whole movie. Although 126 minutes is considered rather lengthy these days, it's not boring at all. That's what is naturally expected from the director Tony Scott. But what is irritating in "Spy Game" is that when you review the movie in your mind later - after all the exciting story is finished - you realize that after all it's an American hero who solve all the problems. Although the American patriotism is notsevereScott's older movies like Top Gun, but it still exists. One may wonder why should such classy actors - Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, …. - should accept such scripts. The movie openly shows scenes of violence in China and Middle East. How long will they continue using such villains - they remind you of "Rambo" - even in serious movies like this one. The worst thing the movie shows about CIA is that they have some clandestine meetings and they sometimes prefer trade over people's life. But who doesn't know that ?? What many Americans still don't know is that people of third world countries are not wild animals. When some respectable artists play in a film like this, then it is no wonder why a cowboy like George Bush want to conquer all the world. The soundtrack including "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits and "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh supports the energetic movie score.<br/><br/>Photography and editing give some extra speed to the movie.<br/><br/>Let's hope that someday even the action movies become indifferent whether people are American, British, Arab or Chinese. A real spy game should be spying for spying's sake not for racial sake. This movie tries to do that, but it is still not enough.<br/><br/>I rate this movie 6 of 10 for being technically well-made.
Manages to be entertaining and reasonably exciting. Scott's style may be slick and tricky but, if this and his last film, "Enemy of the State," are any indication, he's lost the glossy sadism that characterized his previous work.
Muir lies about his number of wives throughout the movie. He refers to agents and assets that servedcover wives,his wives. He actually has only been married once to a Korean woman. His one wife stayed in Korea while Muir did two tours in South America. It's presumed that she has died much earlier. Harry Duncan is located in Hong Kong and played by David Hemmings. We seem him at the beginning of the movie calling Muir at home, and at the end of the movie negotiating the power outage in China. Operation Sideshow was run by the CIA to bug the Chinese side of the trade negotiations happening during the present day in the movie. Tran (the Chinese asset who escapes the prison at the beginning of the movie and is seen in a photograph later) is part of Sideshow, and Bishop piggybacks off this operation by convincing him to share prison schematics and rescue Hadley. Bishop was not a part of this operation, but rather was in China to free Hadley from the prison. She is the mother of the movie's director Tony Scott (and also mother of Ridley Scott).
